Project status: In progress
Revitalisation of a historic complex of three former factory buildings in Warsaw's Praga Północ district
Following the renovation of the three historic buildings of the former Sugar Factory, the project will deliver ten residential units in the main building, two detached buildings and three retail units. The courtyard of the Sugar Factory will become a green enclave with lush vegetation and paved paths. The buildings will retain their historic character, and thanks to the added storey and new windows, the interiors will become brighter. Parking spaces will be hidden beneath the courtyard so as not to disturb the historic appearance of the property.
History
Franciszek Anczewski, one of the most important figures in the history of the capital's confectionery industry, played a key role in the transformation of Nowa Praga. He moved his Sugar Factory from the centre of Warsaw to the right bank of the river, to a street that was renamed 11 Listopada in 1921. His business dates back to 1865, and at the time the Anczewski brand rivalled such renowned companies as Blikle and Wedel in quality.
In the early 20th century, a single-storey brick factory building was erected whose design and architectural detailing drew on Industrial Gothic. Subsequent stages of expansion brought further investment, including the construction of a bakery with an ornamental chimney and the extension of the building with a new wing and an annexe with a basement.
